5th Grade Math Review: Day 9
Updated: Apr 28, 2020
In Thursday's post we reviewed taxes and patterns in tables. If you missed the live stream with the answers, you can watch that here. Today, in the third and final week of our review, we turn to the third reporting category in the assessed curriculum - Geometry and Measurement.
Equations for Volume
This is a new concept for fifth graders. While the formula for finding volume is fairly straightforward, students also need to understand the concept behind. Watch this short video for an explanation.
Now that you know how to find the volume of a rectangular prism or cube, use your new skill on the problem below.
Perimeter and Area
Building on what students learned in 4th grade, 5th graders are asked to continue to apply their knowledge of geometry to find the area and perimeter of shapes. The difference in 5th grade as that the problems will sometimes include both concepts at the same time.
This simple problem from a released STAAR test was a griddable item, which meant there were no answer choices to select from. You'll have to come up the correct answer all on your own.
Here's another problem, but take care. Make sure to read what the question is asking and not just use the diagram.
Correct Answers Tonight (4/6/20) at 8:00 pm (CDT), I'll live stream from my YouTube channel to go over the answers to these three practice problems. Make sure you've already worked them out ahead of time. I can answer questions you might have in the stream chat and I'll put the recording on my channel and in this post for anyone that couldn't watch it live. If you haven't done so already, you can subscribe to the channel to get notifications for live streams and new videos that I post.
Here's the live stream with the answers and explanations.
