This training is engaging, fully immersive, and practical. Flexibility exists to best meet your unique professional development needs, including virtual delivery. It is designed to be a full-day workshop. The training focuses on choosing the right words to teach, the ABCs of direct vocabulary instruction, and how to place words in context. It also investigates basic and complex processing tasks, playing with words for deepening learning and review, and how to build vocabulary instruction into your next unit plan.

 

8:30 am – 10:00 am

All vocabulary is not created equal. Teaching new words is as easy as ABC. 

  • Explore the two criteria for choosing words to study – importance and usefulness

  • Learn how self-ratings impact motivation and recall of target terms

  • Practice the ABCs of direct vocabulary instruction

  • Create semantic maps to relate new words with existing knowledge

 

10:15 am – 11:30 am

Connecting new words is essential. Basic processing tasks utilize individual learning styles.

  • Take a learning style inventory to explore the four major learning styles

  • Experience several processing tasks designed to improve vocabulary knowledge

 

11:30 am – 12:45 pm (Lunch)

 

12:45 pm – 2:00 pm

Complex processing tasks incorporate all learning styles. Playing with words engages students and deepens understanding.

  • Interact with complex processing tasks that require student-generated responses

  • Play with words in a variety of enjoyable ways

  • Investigate shades of meaning and word connotations

 

2:15 pm – 3:30 pm

The five-part program can be implemented with varying schedules. Let’s build vocabulary instruction into your next unit.

  • Examine 3-, 4- and 5-day weekly schedules for implementation

  • Find a routine that works with your instructional program

  • Plan to integrate vocabulary instruction into your next unit of study
