6th Grade Math Review: Day 2

Updated: May 25

You made it through day one of our 6th grade math review! Yesterday's post talked about ordering rational numbers on a number line and from real-world contexts. If you missed the live stream of the answers, you can watch that here. Today we continue looking at the first reporting category (section) of the 6th grade curriculum, numerical representations and relationships, by examining fractions, ratios, and percents.

Fractions as Division

Did you that fractions are simply unfinished division problems? While students might not think of fractions in this way, understanding this relationship is essential. To learn more, check out the video below.

Now that you've refreshed your memory, go ahead and solve this problem from a released STAAR test.

Ratios and Multiplication

Ratios are a new concept for 6th graders and will be examined again and again all throughout middle school. If the relationship between ratios and multiplication doesn't ring a bell, watch the video below.

Now that you know the how ratios relate to multiplication, try this problem from a released STAAR test.

Converting Fractions and Percents

6th graders do a lot of conversions! They need to be able to change decimals to and from percents, decimals to and from fractions, and fractions to and from percents. The last skill was tested on the 2017 STAAR test and an explanation video is shown below.

Hopefully the video helped you learn a few tricks for changing fractions and percents. Try your skill with this problem from a released STAAR test.

Correct Answers

Tonight (4/14/20) at 8:00 pm (CDT), I'll live stream from my YouTube channel to go over the answers to these three practice problems. Make sure you've already worked them out ahead of time. I can answer questions you might have in the stream chat and I'll put the recording on my channel and in this post for anyone that couldn't watch it live.

If you haven't done so already, you can subscribe to the channel and click the bell icon to get notifications for live streams and new videos that I post.

Here's a recording of the live stream with the answers and explanations.
