6th Grade Math Review: Day 11

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

In yesterday's post we spent a little more time on volume and learned how to calculate the area of a trapezoid. If you weren't able to catch the live stream with the answers, you can watch it here. Today we begin Reporting Category 4 - Data Analysis and Personal Financial Literacy.

Describing Data

Before getting into the various graphs that 6th graders have to create and interpret, there are some new terms that they have to be exposed to. Here's a quick video on the various ways to describe data.

Try to solve this problem to test your new knowledge.

Range, Median, Mode, and IQR

While the first three terms are not new to 6th graders, the IQR (Interquartile Range) of a data set is a new concept. Here's a short recap of these vocabulary words used to describe data.

Here's a deceptively simple problem from a released STAAR test to practice on. Take care, though. This will be hard to solve without ordering the numbers from least to greatest.

Percent Bar Graphs

While students have seen bar graphs since 1st grade, a new type of bar graph is introduced in 6th grade. It takes quite a few steps to accurately create and interpret a percent bar graph. Here's a short explanation video to help you out.

With that information, try out this problem from a released STAAR test.

An additional feature of this standard that was not tested in 2017 is a relative frequency table. To learn more about how to make and interpret those, see here.

Correct Answers Tonight (4/29/20) at 8:00 pm (CDT), I'll live stream from my YouTube channel to go over the answers to these three practice problems. Make sure you've already worked them out ahead of time. I can answer questions you might have in the stream chat and I'll put the recording on my channel and in this post for anyone that couldn't watch it live.

If you haven't done so already, you can subscribe to the channel and click the bell icon to get notifications for live streams and new videos that I post.

Here's the live stream with the answers and explanations.
