5th Grade Math Review: Day 7

In yesterday's post we looked at division, both with 2-digit divisors and with unit fractions. If you missed the live stream with the answers, you can watch that here. Today we're going to expand our knowledge of fractions by modeling adding and subtracting fractions and also start representing problem situations with an unknown, or variable.
Modeling the Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
In the fourth grade, students learned how to do this with fractions that had the same denominator. Now, fifth graders must learn how to first find a common denominator before adding or subtracting fractions.
Now you can try it out yourself. Take a look at this sample problem from a released STAAR test below.
Representing Problems with an Unknown Quantity
This is a skill that students worked hard to learn in 4th grade. There's not really any changes to this standard from 4th to 5th grade except that 5th graders are now being asked to solve, not just represent, problems with an unknown quantity represented by a letter.
With the information you reviewed in the video above, you're now ready to try these two problems.
