5th Grade Math Review: Day 6

Updated: Apr 1, 2020

In yesterday's post we looked at estimation and adding and subtracting all kinds of numbers. If you weren't able to catch the live stream with the answers, you can watch it here. Today we are back to division, still within Reporting Category 2, Computations and Algebraic Relationships, the largest of the four divisions of the 5th grade assessed curriculum. Students are learning how to divide with 2-digit divisors and by unit fractions.

Dividing with 2-Digit Divisors

In the fourth grade, students learned the skill of long division, with dividends of up to four digits, including interpreting remainders. Fifth graders add onto that skill by dividing with 2-digit divisors, learning how to use estimation (yesterday's skill) to start off on the right foot.

Here's a pretty straightforward problem that you can now try using the skill of division with a 2-digit divisor.

Division with Unit Fractions

Something brand new for 5th graders is the concept of dividing whole numbers by unit fractions and vice versa. This idea really helps students begin to understand the intricate relationship between multiplication and division, something they'll build upon in the 6th grade.

Now that you've watched the video above, you're ready to tackle the following two problems.

Correct Answers Tonight (3/31/20) at 8:00 pm (CDT), I'll live stream from my YouTube channel to go over the answers to these three practice problems. Make sure you've already worked them out ahead of time. I can answer questions you might have in the stream chat and I'll put the recording on my channel and in this post for anyone that couldn't watch it live. If you haven't done so already, you can subscribe to the channel to get notifications for live streams and new videos that I post.

Here's the live stream with the answers and explanations.
