5th Grade Math Review: Day 5

Updated: Mar 31

In Thursday's post we looked at dividing decimals, both with and without using area models. If you didn't catcht the live stream with the answers last week, you can watch it here.

Today we are diving into estimation to solve problems with all four operations and the most vague and far-reaching (in my opinion) of all 5th grade standards - the infamous 5.3k which asks students to add and subtract positive rational numbers fluently. In other words, be prepared to add and subtract anything, from decimals to mixed numbers to fractions, both proper and improper.

Estimating to Solve Problems

Estimation is something that students have performed for several years by the time they get to 5th grade. Using either rounding or compatible numbers, students should be able to solve problems for approximate answers.

With that under your belt, try to solve this problem from a released STAAR test.

Adding and Subtracting Positive Rational Numbers

There are a lot of different things that students will need to know in order to competently navigate this standard. I've included two videos below, but there are others on my 5th grade playlist that relate to this standard. First, watch this video on adding and subtracting decimals.

With that information, now you can solve this problem.

Here's another video, this one about adding mixed numbers, that you will find helpful.

While adding mixed numbers is difficult, you know now how it's done. Try your hand at this sample problem below.

Correct Answers Tonight (3/30/20) at 8:00 pm (CDT), I'll live stream from my YouTube channel to go over the answers to these three practice problems. Make sure you've already worked them out ahead of time. I can answer questions you might have in the stream chat and I'll put the recording on my channel and in this post for anyone that couldn't watch it live. If you haven't done so already, you can subscribe to the channel to get notifications for live streams and new videos that I post.

Here's the live stream with the answers and explanations.
